I often referred to homeschooling as open source education. I'm sure my kids (and most HSers that I know) would have done fine in school. However, at home they thrived. They were able to dive deep and spend hours and hours and hours on the things that interested them. In both cases they were able to really excel because of the time afforded them to focus on their passions. That environment could be recreated in the school system. But I wouldn't bet on it happening anytime soon.
I've flirted with various non Gmail options, and it is on my todo list to migrate off of Gmail for good. But for now, I'm still there. I would like to just use my domain host's email service, but it doesn't offer near enough storage. I need to pick a paid email hosting provider and just do it.
