Peter, thanks for the article. I found it, and the comments, valuable.
I've largely sworn off providing Windows IT client services, unless it is for someone who is clearly motivated. And, even then, it is to train that someone for doing the repair & maintenance moving forward.
Windows clients are simply too much of a time-sink for a condition which will, more often than not, recur in short order. Call me a fatalist.
I second Wian's recommendation to include a router running OpenWrt. The act of sharing a network connection, I find, is akin to breaking bread: people open up. (And thanks for the reminder that they'd make great educational gifts.)
Mobiles (i.e. Android) and the need for electricity have definitely influenced my packing list more and more. A couple of things not mentioned:
- a surge protector with built in USB chargers
- a battery pack
- an emergency radio/flashlight/charger (handcrank & solar)
- plastic shims (for prying)
- suction cup (for tugging)
Thanks for the article. It's always good to get the word out about open source apps. Consider, instead of a static page, reviewing or promoting the use of agnostic resources out there. In this case, I'm thinking of alternativeto.
For years, they've been a great, curated, resource for those looking to replace one app with another. Their filters allow for focusing, not just on platforms but, on licensing.
I'm sure there are other resources like this but, this is one I keep coming back to, time and time again.
Thanks again for the article.
