Gregg Ferrie is the Director of Information Technology for School District No. 63 (Saanich) in southern Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Gregg has a Master of Science degree in Information Systems and has been involved with open source software since the late 1990s. The school district has implemented Linux diskless clients utilizing many open source programs and has recently incubated the openStudent Student Information System as an alternative to commercial SIS's currently being deployed. Gregg is passionate about the support and use of open source software in K-12 education.

Three open source school management software programs for teachers and student

Thanks very much for the comment Jen. Since 2000 we have been implementing open source software in schools using Linux as the operating system and a host of OS applications. As an example, our students began by using StarOffice, then OpenOffice and now LibreOffice - quite a progression over the years.

The openStudent project is a logical outcome of our use of open source software and I would be very pleased to elaborate on the history and what led us up to this point.

Thanks again for the articles you and so many others contribute. It's one of my primary sources of open source information.
