I think one of the most important things is to keep things friendly and helpful to newcomers. You want them to feel welcome to contribute, and help them understand how contributing is typically a stepwise process.
In projects where there may be many whose primary language is not English, primary English-speakers may need to smooth out the terseness or roughness of the public interactions.
I find that ls -lh gives me what I need most often: permissions, owner/group, human-readable size, and date last saved.
