Many years ago I started doing dual boot machines. The problem there is that to move a file from one to the other you need to save to a disk. When VMs came along I eventually switched to that (mostly just to do my taxes on Windows). The problem I ran into with VMs with somewhat aging machines and Windows 10 was resource allocation. You have to decide how much of your processing power to give to the VM, and how much RAM too. Even with fiddling around, last year my Win10 was VERY sluggish. Now I'm thinking of simply having a separate Win physical machine, where I can easily transfer files over the home network as needed.
