One of the challenges of writing documentation is to be able to put yourself in the perspective of the new user, something like Bob Seeger's line, "Wish I didn't know now what I didn't know then."
A help comes from a mail list or other newbie user feedback. When you see the same sort of questions coming in, it's time to create some documentation, not just keep referring people to old mail list posts.
I have a fairly early model that's just gathering dust somewhere.
