I haven't tried this vendor but I've had good luck with my System76 machines. It works perfectly fine nowadays which is cool. I'm always torn between rewarding a big vendor like Dell who finally caters to the market or rewarding the smaller vendors who are only targeting Linux. I kind of wish I had to buy many laptops so I could split the difference :)

I'm a big fan of your suggestions. I wouldn't write off Diaspora and Friendica so much but your warnings about being a less user friendly experience than Facebook at this point has some merits. While Friendica has bit more confusing UI, because it has a lot more features, it has a big advantage of being able to integrate with the rest of the Fediverse. I just wrote this morning that my Friendica timeline today was a combination of posts across four different social networks. Since it implements several protocols, including ActivityPub, it's really able to create a unified experience. Maybe I should write an OpenSource.com post on this topic :)
