This June's POSSE cohort is making great progress on various HFOSS projects including OpenMRS, GNOME Accessibility projects, Sahana, and Ushahidi. Another POSSE is planned for spring 2014 so keep your ears open for the announcement!
I am aware of Project:Possibility the great effort that USC and UCLA students put into Caribou. I'm hoping that in the next few years we'll see some return on that effort, although I note that it may be difficult to connect recent efforts to motivation provided several years in the past. Simply having a larger body of folks participating in OSS would be one indication.
