I wonder if running "sysprep" on the MSWindows system (while still running in "baremetal" mode) might have made it possible to migrate the install to a generic configuration that could have been re-activated under VirtualBox? Just be sure to have the licence key first.
Of course, I'm not experienced enough in sysprep to know what other steps would be needed, but it's the path I would have investigated.
