Thanks Don! A while back I moderated an open community call where we talked about what makes a good leader. These insights were common between contributors, most of whom had experienced both good and bad leaders.
We should strive towards Meritocracy, but as I've said in the past our social and cultural upbringings take precedent over our aspirations. Even people who have earned credibility will be victims when situations become politically complicated or when "leaders" feel threatened. Human interactions and relationships are more complicated that our social architectures, be it hierarchical or meritocratic or democratic, can make room for. Hence the need for empathy, good will and understanding in individual situations. Sometimes, the structure needs to be ignored in favor of not ignoring the person.
