At Greenpeace, people weren't enthused about the idea of the call being open. Several folks thought we should only invite a certain group of people. To ease everyone into the idea, for the 1st call, I invited the suggested groups and a few "ringers" - e.g. to support me, I invited people who know how to lead through behavior. Seeing these people (and myself) interacting, led those who thought it should be more closed to play with the idea of a "community call". In the next session, I sent an open invitation. I included in the moderation how wonderful it was to have people from HR alongside of campaigners and senior managers**. Now, the people who said "this should only be for Group X" have admitted the value of mixed community.

Bringing openness to a more traditional organization takes time. We can't force our ideal down people's throats, we have to understand what a mind shift it is to tear down those brick walls. But little by little, we'll get there!

** I reflected on that call here: http://www.zythepsary.com/leadership/storytelling-in-january/

I agree! My hope is that we are able to spread this new story far and wide. Please join us in a community call! Our next one is February 2nd, and I'd love to hear how your reflections on these shifts have affected you and your work.
