I agree that our educational institutions tend to keep learners sandboxed, out of the real world. But by doing that and giving them "fake" problems to solve, we're doing a disservice. Learners participating in FOSS communities is what FOSS communities ARE, so it's a perfect atmosphere for students still in schools.
Mental Health is, in general, highly stigmatized in our society. There is a great deal of research about mental health, so I would be quite curious to see how the current research matches with "developers". I seriously doubt this particular group is so massively different from other focus groups that have been studied, but I'm still glad that someone is focusing much needed attention. Anyone who speaks about mental health in the workplace is a hero, developer or not.
