Victorhck > KMail is not an option, cause IMHO it's better :) as it supports multiple mail storage formats (MAILDIR included). Thunder didn't have such feature years ago, and still don't as far as I know.
Also my comment goes to alpine, WHY alpine?! It cannot be alternative, as it does not support PGP, I would recommend cone instead, it atleast supports PGP :) and other interesting stuff :)
