Open source largely originated in universities. I learned about open source during the early 1990's by taking courses in computer science. Back then it was hard to find people outside of university communities who had ever heard of open source software. Now universities are huge buyers of proprietary curriculum-in-a-can stuff, and of course the textbook publishers push huge amounts of proprietary courseware (conveniently available in both Windows and OSX versions, how thoughtful) as another way to run up the textbook bill. I have serious doubts whether it's possible today to earn a degree without owning at least one computer with a proprietary OS. Probably a combination of the usual kickbacks and other corruption, plus political pressure on universities to operate like a business.
