Great intro! I especially like the advice to try things in a virtual machine environment first. I've spun up and killed a number of them in just the past year or so that I've taken a more active interest in open source projects.
I also lurked for some time in the appropriate IRC channels and that does help for sure. One other tidbit of advice - don't assume you HAVE to start coding to help a project. Other good places to start include documentation and test/QA (neither of which necessarily require coding skills, depending on the project).
