The Professors' Open Source Software Experience (POSSE) workshop is being held this year in Philadelphia from June 2-4. To prepare for the workshop, online activites are were assigned to be completed in stages and culminated on June 1.
POSSE began as an outreach effort by Red Hat in 2009 to immerse professors and faculty members in the tools and practices of open source communities and has made its run in cities around the world such as: Raleigh, Singapore, Cape Town, Rochester, Worcester, and Doha. The goal is to help educators learn about free and open source software (FOSS) and thus to encourage students to participate in global open source community projects.
Participants will also be involved in Humanitarian Free and Open Source Software (HFOSS) projects on June 5. HFOSS projects exist to meet a social need in areas such as healthcare, economic development, disaster management, ecology, or education.
POSSE is an important catalyst project for Red Hat; when university and college professors incorporate well established open source methods and techniques of collaboration into their respective courses, students are then exposed to new, clever ways to do work. Their participation helps grow the pool of open source coders, tinkerers, and collaborators and encourages the development of future entrepreneurs and engineers who push technological innovation forward.
