I think it's a bit of a stretch to call these people "open source enthusiasts", since the concept didn't quite exist then. Back then, people did interesting stuff and freely shared it because that was the quickest way to make progress. There wasn't this mindset of monetizing every new idea.
A challenging problem of audio analysis is bird songs. I have yet to see any method which helps with this. One can find graphical representations of a bird's song, showing the frequency content over the course of the song, but there isn't any good way of matching this. Perhaps this is a direction that might be fruitful.
