I tried to get into markdown a bit some time ago, but one of the things I quickly found is that there a several versions of it, which makes things a bit confusing.
The great thing about Scribus is that it's useful for more than what you show. I use Scribus for making presentations. Usually a US Letter page in landscape format. You can create Master Pages to show repetitive elements, and anyone can use the PDF it generates.
As far as making books, Scribus is a star there too -- Christoph Schäfer and I made the official Scribus manual using Scribus -- this was 400+ pages long!
