I've got a list of things I'll do differently next time, but I think that the big takeaway was how empowered the students felt. I'd like to think that empowerment leads to engagement. It was fun!
I'm glad that you enjoyed the article. We have had success with OpenMRS, Ushahidi and the GNOME Accessibility tools. You might also check Openhatch.org as there is a list of bugs there, although I'm not sure how current it is.
