I spotted that problem, too, Thomas. I have this idea floating around in the back of my head that the Drupal Association could help here. What if there were a central place people and companies could donate to and Dries (with initiative leads or others) could spread that money around as needed? Then we might be able to get the important, but less "sexy" initiatives done faster and better. The amount of effort some of the current initiative leads have had to put in to get funding and resources has been painful to watch. They should be concentrating on making Drupal better, not project managing how to make it possible to make Drupal better, if you see what I mean ...
Leslie!
