I agree. If members of a project can be transparent with their motives for participating, and have a window into the motives of other participates, that allows a foundation from which trust and understanding can be built. If there is trust and understanding, sharing info, collaborating, being transparent, and creating value are much easier.
I've seen Tim Yeaton at Red Hat and Mike Olson at Cloudera both take the challenge.
