I keep all of the GNOME GitLab notification mails for my projects around, because Thunderbird's search allows me to search only their subject (aka the issue's summary). I haven't found if GitLab allows for the same in its UI, but am pretty sure it doesn't.
Also, when comparing it to Bugzilla's search capabilities (with its whole dedicated page of a search form), I miss the date-and-time-based search capabilities the most.
The usual problem we face is users who have never heard of layers before (i.e. they go from Paint to GIMP), have no concept of them altogether and thus can't handle them.
Users of other applications that have layer support and thus know about layers are rare, and so their problems are never addressed.
