There is also Cream http://cream.sourceforge.net/download.html

Cream is a plugin that makes gvim act like act like a modern editor. With cream, you can use the mouse and common accelerators (Ctrl+C for copying,...) rather than memorize its keystrokes. :)

Your second dialog is as bad as the first. In the 1960, psychiatrists proved that carrot-and-stick techniques only work for rote work, not intellectual work. By asking where the project is right now, you have crated a deadline (a stick). Try this instead:

Me: How is Project Alpha going?

Jane: It's going great, thanks for asking.

Me: Is there anything you need?

Jane: Er, no, not a the moment.

Me: Great! But if you need help with dealing with upper management, don't be afraid to ask.

This conversation makes you a resource Jane can use. It puts you on her side. And it tells her you are willing to risk your job to get the project done.

Now all you need do is convince upper management that they should be a resource you can use. ;)
