Hi Eddie,
I wouldn't say there's a right or wrong way to do the open source thing. The bit about the chickens was just to say that we shouldn't be so inured to a culture (any culture) that we stop questioning it and ourselves. I think a lot of us gravitate toward open organizations because their values resonate with our personal values, and it's the values that align that we should champion. Hope that helps!
